People use location based search engines for a wide range of tasks – from finding apartments, jobs, and well-rated restaurants to local interest groups, shops, and even carpooling partners. All these search intents have an underlying need, which can only be satisfied by a relatively small number of other persons or institutions. In our research, we explore the nature of these needs, and how exact knowledge and formalization of them can improve the way people search and publish location based information. Results from this line of research are also used within the GoEco! project, where we offer alternative routes and schedules to satisfy people’s mobility needs.
In the MIE Lab, we develop formalizations and algorithms based on Semantic Web technologies, incorporating state-of-the-art techniques from artificial intelligence and real-time data processing, to improve the ways people can search on the internet.
